About Us

Michigan Chandelier has been servicing Michigan since 1913. Our goal is to provide quality lighting and electrical materials at the lowest prices combined with the best service in the industry.

Michigan Chandelier Company's History

In late 1912, Nathan Silberstein, a Hungarian immigrant, was sent to Detroit by his boss Joseph Bluestone to start a branch of Pittsburgh-based Bluestone Chandelier Co. Mr. Silberstein did so, operating under the name Michigan Chandelier Co. and was listed as such in the 1913 Detroit City Directory. A year or so later, Mr. Silberstein was ordered to burn down the business within 24 hours in order to collect the insurance, or to get out. Mr. Silberstein, fortunately, did neither. Instead, he bought out the business from Mr. Bluestone and opened Michigan Chandelier Co. as its own entity on Oct. 12, 1914. It was later incorporated on Nov. 29, 1933.

Michigan Chandelier was a manufacturer of lighting fixtures and sold all kinds of electrical equipment, including appliances, at both wholesale and retail. Detroit was expanding rapidly and the Company took advantage. They had two unique services for electricians: on commercial jobs (primarily schools) they did the lighting and power takeoffs and guaranteed the quantities. If their quote was in error they ate the difference. For the residential market, they offered single carton pre-packed “house packs.” With no advance notice, contractors could stop in and pick up all the lighting fixtures needed for a new house packed in one carton.

During World War II, the metals needed to manufacture lighting fixtures were dedicated to the war effort and Michigan Chandelier closed its manufacturing operation.

Nathan Silberstein died young, and several years later, his just-out-of-college older son, Milton Doner, took over operation of the company. In 1995, Nathan’s granddaughter, Judy Berne and her husband Ed took over the business. In 2003, Ken Sanders, who started with the Company as a high school co-op student, was named President and CEO.

MCC’s four locations offer a solid and secure presence in our marketplace We pride ourselves in keeping ahead of the technology that’s evolving in our various product lines. Markets continue to change but Michigan Chandelier’s dedication to product and service have kept it a major factor in electrical supplies, commercial and retail lighting in Southeast Michigan for more than 100 years.
